What is Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy?

Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) is grounded in the concept of neuroplasticity, which allows us to retrain the muscles in our face, tongue, and throat through targeted mouth exercises, forming new neural pathways in the brain. When we stop using certain muscles, the neural connections linked to them weaken. Neuromuscular re-education relies on consistent repetition, with the right intensity and frequency, to bring about changes in the brain. As facial muscles develop new coordination patterns, orofacial functions are restored. The duration of therapy can vary, typically lasting several months to a year, as it takes time to establish lasting neural connections. The benefits of Myo Therapy can include improved breathing, better sleep quality, reduced facial or jaw pain, and enhanced swallowing and digestion.

What is an Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder? (OMD)

Oral myofunctional disorders (OMDs) are disorders of the oral and facial muscles and functions that affect oral rest posture. The three main causes are tongue-tie, mouth breathing, and oral habits. These improper functions can lead to a variety of issues, including breathing difficulties, poor sleep quality, speech issues, and improper swallowing patterns. By addressing the underlying muscle imbalances and teaching proper oral habits, orofacial myofunctional therapy aims to improve oral function and promote better health and wellness.

What is Correct Oral Rest Posture?

Breathing through the nose encourages proper oral posture, which is essential for the healthy growth and development of our jaws, teeth, and airway. When the tongue rests against the roof of the mouth, with the tip just behind the upper front teeth (on the "N" spot), it applies outward pressure on the upper dental arch. This pressure is balanced by the inward forces from the cheeks and closed lips while breathing through the nose. As a result, this creates a broad, U-shaped palate, similar in shape to the tongue, and supports a strong jaw, proper cervical posture, and a wide, attractive smile. The roof of the mouth also serves as the base for the sinuses, so when the palate is naturally widened by the tongue, it opens the nasal passages, improving breathing. Keeping the lips closed and the tongue in the correct position is key to fostering proper facial development and maintaining a healthy airway!

Signs & Symptoms

Several signs and symptoms may indicate a need for orofacial myofunctional therapy. These may include:

  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing can lead to digestive issues and malnutrition if left untreated.

  • Mouth breathing can contribute to dry mouth, bad breath, and an increased chance of dental problems.

  • Speech difficulties include lisps, stuttering, or pronouncing certain sounds.

  • Thumb sucking or prolonged pacifier use beyond infancy, which can lead to dental malocclusions and orthodontic issues.

  • Tongue thrusting leads to dental misalignment and speech problems.

  • Jaw pain or tension can indicate temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders or muscle dysfunction.

  • Facial asymmetry may be caused by underlying muscle imbalances or improper oral habits.

If you or your child are experiencing any of these symptoms, it may be beneficial to undergo a comprehensive evaluation by us!
