Restore Your Smile with Dental Crowns in Victoria

Dental crowns are one of the most common dental procedures. Crowns are used to extend the life of a tooth or for aesthetic reasons and are also used with dental implants to replace a missing tooth. Dental crowns are ceramic or gold coverings that replace damaged, unesthetic or missing tooth structure, increasing the strength and performance of the tooth. My Victoria Dentist offers single-visit CEREC dental crowns individually designed for each patient using an optical scanner instead of impressions. This allows for a digitally precise fit and function. For patients that would like an improvement to their smile, we can design the shape and size of the teeth prior to treatment to allow patients to preview their new smile. What are the Functions of Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are utilized to fully cover or "cap" a tooth that has been damaged. In addition to reinforcing a compromised tooth, a crown can enhance its appearance, shape, or alignment. Crowns are also employed to create a tooth-like structure and shape on top of an implant for proper functionality. Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be colour-matched to blend seamlessly with natural teeth. Alternative materials include gold and metal alloys, ceramic and acrylic. These alloys generally offer greater strength than porcelain, making them recommendable for posterior teeth. Porcelain fused to a metal shell is frequently used due to its durability and aesthetic appeal.

One-Visit CEREC Dental Crowns

With a single appointment at our clinic, you can get a CEREC dental crown. With this technology, patients avoid the need for temporary crowns while waiting for permanent crowns to be fabricated in a laboratory and avoid the inaccuracy created by the traditional approach of taking impressions.

CEREC stands for “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics.” Our dentists use this system to digitally design and create your crown on the spot. Before the crown is made, you will see an image of what your crown will look like.

Like other crowns, a CEREC crown is made of naturally coloured porcelain. This material is very durable and can be coloured to match the colour of your teeth.

Benefits of CEREC Dental Crowns

Some of the advantages of using CEREC are:

Immediate functionality restored
More accurate fit
Individual, digital design for improved function

A second appointment is not needed

Sensitivity and gum irritation created by the temporary crown is avoided

Process of Getting CEREC Crowns

Using CEREC technology, it only takes one appointment to receive your final crown. The tooth is shaped to remove the damaged tooth structure and allow room for the ceramic. Once the tooth is shaped, a small camera is used to scan and recreate a 3D image of all teeth in the patient’s mouth, including the tooth prepared for a crown. Optical scanning and specialized digital mapping technology help our dentists design the tooth for optimal function and fit. The digital design process simulates jaw movement during chewing, which optimizes function. Once the crown is designed, a mill shapes the porcelain block into the new crown.

Common Reasons You Need Dental Crowns

Crowns are often used to protect and restore damaged or broken teeth function. Crowns are also used to improve the esthetics of teeth when veneers or onlays are not appropriate. The most common situations where crowns are recommended include:

Covering a cracked or damaged tooth

Posterior teeth are especially vulnerable to fractures. Often a cusp will fracture or break off entirely during chewing. Covering the damaged area will help to protect the tooth against further fractures and potential tooth loss.

Root canal restoration

Root canal treatment is effective in relieving symptoms from inflamed and infected teeth. However, there is a high risk of tooth fracture after a root canal treatment. It is highly recommended to have a crown placed following a root canal to avoid potential tooth loss.

Cosmetic procedures

Cosmetic procedures improve the overall appearance of your teeth and help you smile without any inhibitions. Dental crowns improve the colour and shape of teeth and are used when veneers or onlays are inappropriate to create an aesthetic improvement.

With implants

A crown is placed either on an existing tooth structure or an implant. A dental implant is a structure that replaces a missing tooth. Once the implant is secured, an abutment is placed on top of the implant, and a crown is affixed atop the abutment.

Differences Between Dental Crowns, Bridges, and Veneers

WHAT IS A DENTAL CROWN?

Purpose: Cover and restore a damaged tooth without extraction

Details: A crown is a porcelain cap placed over a damaged tooth and cemented in place. A crown is used to restore teeth without removing any teeth. A crown is very effective at protecting your tooth from further damage. Alternatively, a crown is an essential part of a dental implant.

WHAT IS A DENTAL BRIDGE?

Purpose: Replace one or more missing teeth by bridging the gap

Details: A dental bridge fills in the missing space caused by one or more lost teeth. A bridge comprises one or more false teeth with one crown on either end of the bridge. Dental bridges literally bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth.

WHAT IS A DENTAL VENEER?

Purpose: Add a coating to your teeth

Details: A dental veneer is a thin coating of tooth-coloured porcelain used to cover the surface of a tooth. A veneer reshapes or brightens teeth that are misshapen or discoloured. Veneers are primarily aesthetic but can be used for restorative purposes, such as preventing further damage to the surface.
